Wander in Whimsy

The west wing is all glass. Sun spots crawl across the floorboards, something small and brave is holding a strawberry that glows, and there is no punchline — just light, sparkle, and the good kind of quiet. No parody lives here.

Second star on the left, then straight on till the greenhouse.

THE WHIMSY WARBLER

a letter from the conservatory · June

Dear wanderer,

At about four in the afternoon the sun comes through the west glass and lands in one perfect stripe across the floor, and I have started planning my whole day around it. It is the most flattering light in the county and it is free, which feels like getting away with something.

This month I painted a mouse holding a strawberry that glows like a little lamp. I don’t know where she’s going with it. I asked. She declined to comment. There is a gnome in the background of another one, minding his own business, doing a midnight swim, absolutely thriving.

Look for the light. It’s doing something ridiculous somewhere near you right now.

— Courtney

A warbler is a bird. A small one. It sings anyway, which is the whole idea.

  THE CONSERVATORY WALLS

Lighter frames, brighter glass. The paintings friggin love visitors here too — they’re just less mysterious about it.

On the shop wall: 8x10 $20 · 11x14 $25 · 12x16 $30 · 16x20 $35

Your monthly 5x7 comes from walls like these — one print every month, sometimes still tacky at the edges, sometimes a favorite finally sized for an envelope. Wander the whole whimsy wall →

  QUESTIONS BY THE GLASS DOOR

WHEN DOES MY FIRST ENVELOPE SHIP? +
Join by the 15th and that month’s envelope goes out on the 20th. Join after the 15th and you start with next month’s — the garden is patient, and now so are you.
IS THIS THE SAME ART AS THE POP-CULTURE PRINTS? +
No — Whimsy is the non-parody line: cottage-core, light-play, mushrooms with polka dots, sparkle. If you want painted-in movie friends, that’s The Hidden Gallery across the hall.
IS IT ALL GNOMES? +
There are gnomes. There are not only gnomes. Wil Huygen is an influence, not a management structure. Expect mice, mushrooms, wildflowers, and a lot of very good light.
DO YOU SHIP OUTSIDE THE US? +
Not at launch. The warbler is working on its passport.
CAN I CANCEL OR PAUSE? +
Anytime, straight from your account. Pause for a season, come back when the light changes.
DO YOU TAKE COMMISSIONS? +
No. Still no. Forever no — it’s the house running joke, and the house is very committed to the bit. The paintings decide; I just keep the brushes wet.
CAN I JOIN BOTH CLUBS? +
Yes, and honestly the hallway loves the traffic. Two envelopes, both on the 20th — see the two wings side by side.

Mind the sun spot on the floor. It’s occupied.

Or slip across the hall to The Hidden Gallery →
